Hills, rivers and winter: garage doors around Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is built on hills, and its garages show it. Across the city and older suburbs, a lot of houses have a garage built right into the basement level, under the living space, with a short and steep driveway dropping down to it. Water runs straight toward those doors every time it rains, and the bottom seal and lower panel take the worst of it. The slope can also leave the door meeting the concrete at a slight angle. Our page on an uneven gap at the bottom explains what that does over time.

The weather here is cloudy and damp more often than not, with plenty of rain and snow. Winters cycle through freeze and thaw all season, and the hilly streets mean heavy use of road salt. Salty slush rides in on every car and settles along the track bottoms and lower hardware. Rust tends to start low and creep upward. When a door begins to look orange at the edges, our rust guide is a good read.

Along the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio rivers, the old mill towns like McKeesport, West Mifflin, Brackenridge, Ambridge and Aliquippa have plenty of older homes, many with single doors and hardware that has seen decades of use. Tired springs are common on doors like these, and a worn one often gives out on a cold morning. Springs and cables are under a lot of tension, so please do not try to adjust or loosen them yourself.

North and east, the picture changes. Around Cranberry, Warrendale and Butler, and out toward Greensburg in Westmoreland County, newer subdivisions have filled in with two-car garages, insulated steel doors and openers that run many times a day. Those doors hold up well, but rollers wear and bottom seals flatten all the same. Long, gray stretches of cold make insulation worth thinking about, and our page on insulation and energy covers the basics.

Questions from homeowners in the Pittsburgh area

Is DoorGuard available in Pittsburgh and the surrounding counties?

Yes. DoorGuard serves 448 ZIP codes in Allegheny, Westmoreland, Washington, Butler, Beaver, Fayette, Armstrong and Lawrence counties, including Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Butler, McKeesport, Beaver Falls and New Castle. Coverage depends on your ZIP code, so try yours in the checker on this page.

My garage sits at the bottom of a steep driveway. Does that matter?

It can. Water and salty slush run toward the door, so the bottom seal and lower hardware wear faster, and a slope can leave the door sitting unevenly when closed. The yearly tune-up includes a full inspection of the springs, cables, rollers and hinges, lubrication of moving parts and a balance test, which helps catch that wear early.

Can I cancel if I move?

Yes. There is no contract and no setup fee. Membership is billed monthly on the date you joined, and you can cancel anytime by email or by calling (877) 257-6027 without any penalty.

What should I do about a garage door that bangs or pops?

Do not ignore it, and do not try to fix a spring yourself. A loud bang can mean a spring has broken, and popping can come from a stressed spring, a cable or a binding roller. Leave the door closed if it seems off and request a visit. Members get priority scheduling and see the repair price with savings before any work begins.
