Living under Pikes Peak is hard on a garage door

Colorado Springs sits at the foot of Pikes Peak, and the mountain shapes the weather. Strong downslope winds can roar out of the canyons on the west side, from Manitou Springs to the neighborhoods along the foothills, and a closed garage door takes those gusts broadside. Over time, hard wind can loosen hinge bolts and track brackets and shove side seals out of place. Summer storms build quickly over the peak, often bringing hail. Our storm season prep guide is a good place to start.

This is very much a military town, with Fort Carson, Peterson, Schriever and the Air Force Academy all close by. Families move in and out on orders, and a house can change owners or renters every few years. That often means nobody knows when the door was last serviced, or whether the springs are the originals. A tune-up soon after a move sets a baseline you can trust. Our new homeowner checklist covers what to look at during the first few weeks in a house.

North of town, Monument and Palmer Lake sit up on the Palmer Divide, which tends to catch more snow than the city just to the south. Up Ute Pass in Teller County, Woodland Park, Divide, Florissant, Cripple Creek and Victor are high enough that winter shows up early and lingers. Cold stiffens grease and rubber, and springs carry a heavier load when everything is stiff. A spring that was already tired often lets go on a frigid morning, so it helps to know the warning signs of a worn spring.

East of the city, growth keeps pushing toward Falcon and Peyton, with newer homes on bigger lots and wind that sweeps in off the plains. Farther out, Calhan, Ramah, Rush and Yoder are farm and ranch country with long gravel roads and detached outbuildings. In older parts of town, like the Old North End and Old Colorado City, homes go back more than a century and many garages are detached. The sun at this elevation is intense, so paint and wood finishes wear faster than people expect. However old the house, please do not try to tighten or swap a spring. That work belongs to someone trained for it.

Does the wind around Colorado Springs wear on a garage door?

Yes, little by little. Repeated gusts flex the panels and work at hinge bolts, track brackets and side seals. The yearly tune-up inspects the rollers, hinges, springs and cables, lubricates every moving part and tests the door's balance, so hardware that has been shaken loose or a door that has drifted out of balance gets caught early.

We could get orders to move. Are we locked into a contract?

No. There is no contract and no setup fee. You are billed monthly on the date you join, and you can cancel anytime by email or by calling (877) 257-6027, with no penalty. If you move again, simply cancel before your next billing date.
