Canyon wind, snow and sun in northern Utah

Davis County is known for its east winds. A few times a year, strong gusts pour down the canyons and out across Farmington, Centerville, Kaysville, Bountiful and the nearby benches. Those winds can flex panels, rattle a door against its stops and loosen the bolts on track brackets. A door that is balanced, with tight hardware, rides out a windstorm far better than one with worn parts. Our storm season prep guide covers what to check when a big wind is in the forecast.

Winter here is long and snowy, and it gets heavier as you climb. Up in Ogden Valley, around Eden and Huntsville, snow stays on the ground much of the season and cold mornings are routine. Down in the valley, plows and road salt keep things moving, and that salt ends up on the garage floor and the lower door panels. A frozen bottom seal or a sluggish opener is common in January. Read about weather seals on the bottom of the door if yours is cracked or torn.

The Ogden area has a wide spread of housing. Older neighborhoods east of downtown Ogden have homes built a century or more ago, some with narrow detached garages and doors that have seen many repairs. Bountiful and the bench above it have plenty of homes on sloped lots. Toward the lake, Syracuse, Hooper, West Haven and Clearfield have filled in with newer subdivisions and wide attached garages, and Hill Air Force Base brings families who move often. If you just moved in, our new homeowner checklist is a good start.

Summer sun is strong at this altitude, and the air is dry. Rubber seals crack and lubricant dries out faster than people expect. Daily swings between cool nights and warm afternoons keep the hardware expanding and contracting. Springs and cables carry high tension through all of it, so leave adjustments to a service visit and never loosen them yourself. The yearly member tune-up lubricates every moving part, tests balance, checks the opener's safety features and looks over the rollers and hinges.

Can the Davis County east winds damage a garage door?

Strong gusts put real stress on a door. They can flex panels and loosen track brackets and hinges, and a door that is already out of balance takes more of a beating. The yearly tune-up tests balance, inspects springs, cables, rollers and hinges and lubricates all moving parts, so loose or worn hardware gets found before the next windstorm.

When can I get a visit after I join?

You can request your tune-up or a repair visit through the site or by calling (877) 257-6027. Members get priority scheduling, and Complete and Premier members get higher priority still. Exact timing depends on availability in your area.

Our house east of downtown Ogden still has its old garage door. Is a membership worth it?

Older doors usually benefit the most. Years of use loosen hinges, wear out rollers and let a door slowly drift out of balance. The yearly tune-up tests balance and the opener's safety features, inspects the springs, cables, rollers and hinges and lubricates every moving part. If something needs repair, you see the price before any work starts, and members save on the labor.
