What garage doors go through in the Lehigh Valley
The valley's three cities grew up dense. Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton are full of rowhouses and twin homes, and where they have garages at all, those are often small detached buildings along a back alley. The doors on them tend to be older, sometimes wood, and have usually been worked on more than once. Wood that sits in alley shade picks up moisture, swells and can start to split along the bottom. Our wood garage door care page covers what to keep an eye on.
Out in the townships, such as Upper and Lower Macungie in western Lehigh County and much of Northampton County, the last few decades brought a lot of new homes with attached two-car garages. Those insulated steel doors are heavier than the old single doors in town, and the springs that lift them carry a lot of tension. A spring that is wearing out often gives a little warning first. Our list of spring warning signs explains what to look and listen for. Never adjust a spring or cable yourself.
Winters bring real snow, nor'easters and weeks of freeze and thaw. Plowed snow piles up against garage doors, meltwater refreezes under the bottom seal, and doors stick to the concrete on cold mornings. Road salt rides in on every car. Summers swing the other way, hot and humid with heavy afternoon thunderstorms, so hardware spends much of the year either wet or sweating.
The area reaches into quieter country too. Across the Delaware River from Easton, Phillipsburg leads into Warren County, New Jersey, where Belvidere, Blairstown, Hope and Hackettstown sit among rolling hills and farms. North of the valley, Carbon County towns near Blue Mountain, like Palmerton and Aquashicola, get colder air and more snow. Homes out there often have long driveways and detached garages that take the weather head on. A spring and fall checklist suits that kind of house.

Do Lehigh Valley winters wear out a garage door faster?
They add up. Freeze and thaw cycles, snow piled against the door and salty water on the garage floor all work on the bottom seal, the track bottoms and the lower hardware, and cold makes springs and openers strain. The yearly tune-up checks springs, cables, rollers and hinges, lubricates every moving part and tests balance and the opener's safety features.
We have two garage doors. Which plan makes sense?
Complete, at $39 a month, includes up to 2 doors with two tune-ups a year. It also waives the service-call fee on member visits and brings greater savings and higher-priority scheduling. If the house has more than two doors, or you want entry-door locks included as well, Premier at $79 a month includes every garage door plus those locks.
What does a tune-up actually involve?
It is a full safety inspection and maintenance visit. The springs and cables are inspected, the rollers and hinges checked, all moving parts lubricated, the door's balance tested and the opener's safety features tested. If anything needs repair, the price with member savings is shown before any work begins, and you decide whether to go ahead.
